About The boatChase is Swan 40, designed by Sparkman and Stephens in the early 1970’s. She’s older, but she’s heavily built and rock solid. I found her in a boatyard in Essex, Conn. She had been sitting on the hard for several years, uncovered, with her running rigging still in place. Needless to say, she had cosmetic challenges. But, her pedigree was still good and – being the owner of a 1971 Swan 36 named Freedom – I knew the issues were only skin-deep. And, her extra 4 feet gave her more headroom and storage space than I could ever have with Freedom. I created a partnership with two other friends, and we purchased her with the idea of chartering her so she could pay for herself. My only caveat on the deal was that someday I might take her on a cruise, in which case my partners would have to content themselves with Freedom while I was gone… Last year, Chase got a new lease on life when she was completely refitted by the Landing School in Kennebunkport. The work was done with the goal of safe blue water cruising in mind. Today, she’s the same tough boat, with a face-lift and all new innards!
