THE CREW

The full time crew for the voyage will be Peter Stoops and Tom Nangle. Others will join up for various parts of the trip. Learn about the crew below.

Peter Stoops

I live in Cumberland, Maine, with my wife Katie and my dog Gus. Katie’s been very patient with my recreational pursuits, and even understands why I’m not very good at yard work… we sort of divide duties and chores depending upon whether they are land or sea-related! How many guys do you know are lucky enough to have a wife who loves her house and yard, but is still willing to put up with a plastic-covered boat shed in the middle of the driveway?

I’ve been sailing since I was very young, but only got around to owning a boat when I turned 30 (practicing for a mid-life crisis?). My dad and I bought Freedom (our Swan 36), and sailing became an important part of my life. I’ve never gotten into too much racing around the buoys… it’s the cruising stuff I like. And, I also have a weird fondness for offshore sailing, so the two have married up to take me sailing in a lot of different places – not to mention a lot of ocean miles covered. I’ve sailed in the South Pacific, made landfall in Bermuda by boat 12 times, performed many sailboat deliveries, and carry a 50 Ton USCG Master’s license.

Professionally, I work at a software company that I helped start in 1993. Although I no longer own part of that company, the good people that run it now have been gracious and generous enough to let me take a sabbatical from my job… I am in their debt.

Tom Nangle

I live in Lincolnville, Maine about six miles from Lincolnville Beach, and ten miles from Bayside, where I keep my Cape Dory 25. For the last ten years I have worked in the banking world, most recently as a small business lender for KeyBank in the Belfast, Camden, Rockland area. Previous to that I worked in the boatbuilding industry, working in the jointer shops of yards in East Boothbay and Bristol, Maine. I also had my own cabinet and boat shop for about six years before getting into banking. So my sailing experience may not be broad, but my interest and involvement with boating goes back many years.

My sailing history revolves around the ownership of two boats; a Boothbay 21 One Design which I restored, and my current Cape Dory 25. I sail as much as possible in the midcoast area. Recently, I had the opportunity to complete a return delivery from Bermuda with Peter, and also do some cruising in the BVIs. Needless to say, I’ve caught the bug and am anxious to explore some new and far flung ports.
It was during my boatyard days that I met Charlie Woodworth, a mutual friend of Peter’s and mine, who went on an extended sailing adventure of his own. Evidently, the idea of that trip has been percolating in my mind ever since. When I casually mentioned that I’d gladly jump at such an opportunity, he put me in touch with Peter the same day. Since that time I have been eagerly anticipating the trip that is now coming to fruition. I can hardly imagine a better way to gain new experiences and meet fascinating people than to embark on our upcoming journey.

Other Crew

Joining us on the trip from Maine to the Azores will be:

  • Jack McBride: Jack owns a development firm and lives in Concord, MA.
  • Mike Giles: Mike owns his own insurance firm and lives in Belfast, ME. Both are experienced sailors.

Joining us in the Azores for a week will be:

  • Katie Wilkinson: My wife… she’s coming to enjoy some of the fruits of her labor – a big part of the trip was possible because of her efforts and patience. She’ll also join us in a few more spots during the course of the cruise.

Joining us in the Azores for a week, and then helping us to sail to Portugal, with a further week in Portugal, will be:

  • Ted Reed and his wife, Susan Pollis: Ted and Sue are old and dear friends of mine, and who love to sail us much as we do. Ted’s been on many ocean voyages with me, and owns his own Alden Caravel.

Were not sure who else will join, but we’re looking forward to seeing more friends either for a cruise, or for any offshore legs!
