LOG ENTRY CHASE LOG–PREDEPARTURE Hard to believe that the $1,000 worth of groceries that was piled high in my living room yesterday is now stowed on board, with even a little room to spare. Everything from Tuna Helper to home-dried beef jerky, Pringles, pasta, snacks and cookies. Fresh food to follow on Monday, including frozen casseroles from my in-laws. Almost all systems tested and working… only exception is the single sideband email connection, which seems to be a problem with my modem. It’s working fine with a borrowed one, and it’s my hope I’ll get mine back on the 2nd… just enough time to stuff all the cables (making the nav station look like it was disemboweled) back behind the electrical panel back. Still a few things left to load: personal gear, linens, the two folding bikes, some extra sails, and the dinghy. Much of this will go in the vberth for the trip over, and then be relocated when dockside. Extra crew (Mike Giles and Jack McBride) to arrive on Tuesday morning. My sailing partner, Tom Nangle, has been here and helping all week. Have a green light from the weather folks for Tuesday, as the strong system centered over us now should pass off to sea. The critical issue this spring has been lows moving to the south of us, bringing strong easterlies. We should be avoiding that for this particular window, and hope to get into the Gulf Stream before any more weather arrives. The strategy is to catch the strong west-to-east current that exists at 38N or so, while at the same time being far enough south to get northerlies from any low pressure system moving below us. So, the initial course looks like a southeasterly one so we can cut the corner to the Stream. Departure time looks to be 1200. |
