LOG ENTRY DATE: June 4, 2003 Left Falmouth Harbor at 1230 on 6/3. What a send off! Relatives and friends just about sunk the dock! And, a very nautical and attractive escort out of the Portland ship channel by both Bagheera and Grebe - flanked by years of tradition! And, importantly, an open water exchange of champagne by 4 friends in a powerboat... to be drunk in the Azores! Wind was steady from the WSW last night at 20. No chance to ease into the offshore thing - just got dunked right in! Leaks to plug, equipment to repair, and getting used to the seas resulting from the wind. Tom and MIke sharing a watch, with Jack and me on the other. We're using my favorite "dogged" watch: (starting at 0400) 4 hours, 4 hours, 4 hours, 4 hours, 3 hours, 3 hours, 2 hours. The shorter watches are early in the morning, so it's easier on everyone. Will probably move to a 1 man watch system once we get Georges Bank and misc. shipping behind us. Strategy is to head SE to about 39 30, 62 00, where we'll catch the Gulf Stream, whose flow is headed almost due east at 2 - 3 knots. It will also put us in a position to avoid easterlies if a low passes near us. We covered a lot of ground in the first 12 hours (90 miles), but have slowed now, as predicted. May have to start the engine for the first time! Misc. equipment failure (Monitor, leaks, etc.), but nothing insurmountable. Close encounter with a fishing vessel in late pm, but no problem other than some words exchanged over channel 16. 24 hour run (from Portland Head): 151 miles. Cold and gray right now - looking forward to the Gulf Stream... we think...! |
