LOG ENTRY DATE: June 6, 2003 Rainy, with winds of 20 - 30 knots through this morning; very lumpy seas (10 - 15') in counter-current created by a warm eddy from the Gulf Stream. Still 40 miles from the Stream, and hoping to be there by 1830 this evening. Current conditions are now breezy but sunny - good change from this morning, when the cockpit was pooped by a boarding wave over the stern! Having real problems with email... can receive but can't send. Am working with Marinenet on the problems, but so far have only chewed through sat phone airtime. Have made good contact with the weathernet on 12359.0—Southbound II. Two forecasts pretty much right on the money. Have also talked with Commander's Weather, and they both seem to agree: good weather through the weekend... except SB II thinks a storm will develop on Sunday, while CW thinks Monday—and with less intensity. Oh well... will have to decide what to do when the time comes. Current thinking is to stay in the Gulf Stream for as long as possible to ride the 2 - 3 knot easterly current. But, don't want to be there if a storm kicks up! Will probably hedge our bets and travel obliquely through it to the southern wall, and be ready to duck out if the forecasts call for it. Good food so far! Frozen casseroles have treated us well, and the fridge has worked perfectly. So far, after being at sea for over 3 days, we have only run the engine for 1.5 hours. We're beginning to run a little low on power (at minus 80, of a maximum of minus 150), but what a commentary on the wind generator! It's done a great job of filling in the needed amp hours when we're not using much electricity. It does have it's idiosyncrasies, though - in winds over 25 or so, it shuts down by free-wheeling, and we have to corral it's blades to cool it down... we've named it Wimpy, for always folding when the going gets tough. Have tried fishing, but no luck... may change when we hit the Stream. Jack has the equipment and the will.... |
